The name comes from the "Explain Like I'm Five" habit online of asking for an answer with no jargon. It is useful to parents fielding "why is the sky blue?", teachers preparing a first lesson, and adults meeting a topic like inflation, vaccines or quantum computing for the first time. The sample on the page asks how the internet sends a photo from a phone to a friend, at the 10-year-old level; a good answer compares it to cutting a picture into numbered puzzle pieces, posting each one separately and having the friend's phone put them back together.
The instruction to the model is "simplify, but do not say anything false", and that is the hard part. Analogies always leave something out, and a 1B model can sometimes pick one that misleads, or state a detail wrongly, especially on science and medicine.
