What is an AI text summarizer?
An AI text summarizer reads a passage and writes a shorter version that keeps its main points. You paste an article, a report, a long email thread or meeting notes, choose how short the result should be, and a language model condenses it. There are four lengths: one sentence, a short paragraph of three or four sentences, five to seven bullet points, or a detailed summary of two to three paragraphs.
The choice depends on what you do next. One sentence is for a subject line or a Slack reply. Bullet points suit a status update or revision notes. The detailed option is for when you need every main point but not the full text, such as briefing someone on a 20-page report. The sample on the page is a news story about a council vote on parking garages and 340 apartments, and the bullet version keeps the numbers, the two sides and the compromise.
Summarizing happens on the Toolz server. Your text is sent over HTTPS, the server builds the prompt and runs Gemma 3 1B, a small open model from Google, with Ollama, and the summary streams back within a few seconds. The text is used to write the summary and then discarded: it is not stored or logged, not used to train any model, and not sent to any third-party AI company.
The limits are real. The model is instructed to keep names and figures accurate and add nothing, but a 1B model can still merge two numbers, drop a caveat, invent a detail or miss the point a human would call central. Each run takes up to 8,000 characters, so split long reports into sections.
It is free with no signup, within about 20 summaries per 10 minutes. The alternatives are skimming and writing the summary yourself, reading the abstract or conclusion if the document has one, or pasting the text into a general AI chatbot run by a large AI company.
How to summarize text with AI
Choose a summary length
Pick One sentence, Short paragraph, Bullet points or Detailed. Bullet points is the most useful default for notes and updates.
Paste the text
Add the article, report section, email thread or notes. Leave out navigation, ads and signatures so the model spends its reading budget on the content.
Press Summarize
The summary streams in as it is written, and Stop ends it at any point.
