What is AI text to speech?
AI text to speech converts written text into spoken audio with a neural voice model. You paste text, pick one of 8 voices (labelled Voice 1 to Voice 8), set the speed anywhere from 0.7x to 1.5x, and the tool reads it aloud in the page. You can then download the result as a WAV file for a video, a presentation, an e-learning module or just to listen to an article away from the screen.
Neural voices sound less robotic than the older system voices built into operating systems, with more natural rhythm and emphasis. That matters when the audio will be heard by other people. It also helps with proofreading: hearing your own writing read back is one of the quickest ways to catch a clumsy sentence.
The speech is made by Piper, an open-source text-to-speech engine, running on the Toolz server. The voices come from a model trained on the LibriTTS-R dataset, which is published under the CC BY 4.0 licence. Your text is sent over HTTPS, turned into audio and sent back to the page. Nothing is downloaded to your device first, so it works in any modern browser, including phones, as long as you are online. The text is used to make the audio and then discarded: it is not stored or logged, not used to train any model, and not sent to any third-party AI company.
There are limits. It speaks English only, so text in other languages will be mispronounced. Each run takes up to 3,000 characters, roughly 450 to 500 words, so split a long document into parts. Unusual names, abbreviations, symbols and numbers may be read in an unexpected way; spelling them out usually fixes it. There is no voice cloning and no control over emotion beyond the voice and speed you choose.
It is free with no signup and no character credits, within about 20 runs per 10 minutes. The alternatives are the read-aloud feature in your browser or operating system, which is free but flatter, or a paid voice service with more languages. This tool gives you neural English voices and a downloadable WAV without an account, and keeps none of your text.
How to convert text to speech
Paste your text
Type or paste up to 3,000 characters of English text.
Pick a voice and speed
Choose one of 8 voices, Voice 1 to Voice 8, and set the speed between 0.7x and 1.5x to suit the listener.
Generate the audio
Press generate. The Toolz server turns the text into speech, which usually takes a few seconds for a paragraph.
Play or download
Listen in the page, and download a WAV file when it sounds right.
What the text to speech tool does
8 neural voices
Eight English voices from a Piper model trained on the LibriTTS-R dataset, labelled Voice 1 to Voice 8.
Speed control
From 0.7x for learners to 1.5x for skimming a long article.
WAV download
Save the audio as an uncompressed WAV for editing in video or audio software.
Works on any device
The voice runs on the Toolz server, so a phone makes audio as fast as a desktop and nothing is downloaded first.
