What is a Word Frequency Counter?

A word frequency counter reads a block of text, splits it into individual words, and reports how many times each distinct word appears. Instead of a single total like a word counter gives, it produces a ranked table: every unique word with its count and its share of the text as a percentage. The word that appears most often sits at the top, so you can see at a glance what a passage is really about.

Writers, editors, students, and SEO practitioners use frequency analysis for different reasons. An editor spots crutch words and unintentional repetition. A student checks that an essay is not leaning on the same term in every paragraph. Someone tuning a page for search looks at keyword density to confirm the target phrase appears often enough to be relevant but not so often that it reads as stuffing. In every case the raw counts turn a vague impression that a word is overused into a number you can act on.

The results depend on a few choices this tool exposes. Case folding decides whether The and the are the same word, which they usually are for counting purposes. A stop-word filter removes high-frequency function words such as the, and, and of, which otherwise dominate the top of the list and hide the words that carry meaning. A minimum length skips very short tokens, and a top-N limit trims a long tail down to the words worth reading.

Call it a word frequency counter, a frequency word counter or a word counter with frequency: the output is the same ranked table, and the Load sample text shows how the filters move it. The 41-word sample puts the at the top with 6 uses, 14.63% of the words, ahead of fox with 5. Tick Remove stop words and only 22 words are counted, so fox moves to first place at 22.73%. Percentages are always a share of the words left after filtering, not of the original text.

Everything runs in your browser. The text you paste is analysed in JavaScript on your own machine and is never uploaded, logged, or stored, so a private draft, a client document, or an unpublished manuscript stays with you. Because there is no server round trip, the tool also keeps working offline once the page has loaded, and it handles large documents without a size cap imposed by an upload limit.

How to use the Word Frequency Counter?

  1. Paste your text

Paste or type the text you want to analyse into the input box, or load the sample to see the format. There is no length limit; long articles and full manuscripts work.

  2. Choose your filters

Decide whether to ignore case, remove common stop words, and set a minimum word length. These options change which words appear in the ranked table.

  3. Read the ranked table

The table lists each word with its count and its percentage of all counted words, most frequent first. The totals show how many words and unique words were found.

  4. Copy the results

Copy the frequency table to your clipboard as tab-separated rows that paste cleanly into a spreadsheet, a document, or a report.

Key Features

  • Ranked frequency table

Every distinct word with its count and its percentage of the text, sorted most frequent first, so the words a document leans on are immediately visible.

  • Stop-word filter

Optionally remove common English function words such as the, and, of, and to, so the ranking surfaces the content words instead of grammar.

  • Case and length controls

Fold case so The and the count together, and set a minimum length to skip short tokens that add noise rather than meaning.

  • Unicode-aware word splitting

Words are matched by Unicode letters and digits, and internal apostrophes and hyphens are kept, so do not and state-of-the-art stay intact.
