Every social platform crops, and each one crops differently. An image that reads well in a feed is one that was made at the ratio that feed serves, which is why the same photograph posted to Instagram, X and LinkedIn needs three files rather than one. These five tools produce those files in your browser, from presets that carry the current pixel sizes rather than a remembered number from a blog post.

The five split by what they do to the frame. Cropping to a preset cuts the image to the target ratio with a focal point you choose, so the part that matters survives. A matte does the opposite, padding a non-square photo out to a square or portrait frame so nothing is cut at all. A carousel slices one wide image into slides that line up edge to edge when swiped. Crop, or pad, or slice

Three of these tools solve the same mismatch in different directions, and picking the wrong one is what produces a feed of beheaded portraits. Cropping keeps the pixel density and loses whatever falls outside the frame, which is right when the subject sits in the middle and there is room to lose. Padding keeps the whole image and fills the remainder, usually with a blurred enlargement of the photo itself, which is right for a composition that cannot be cut, such as a landscape or a screenshot. Slicing is for a picture that is genuinely wider than any single frame: the carousel generator cuts it into consecutive slides that align at the seams as a viewer swipes.

Where a crop is unavoidable, the focal point is the whole game. A centre crop is what every automatic system does and is wrong for most photographs of people, since a face is rarely centred. What a watermark can and cannot do

A watermark deters casual reuse and credits the work when an image travels without its caption. It does not prevent theft: a corner mark crops off in seconds, and content-aware fill removes an unobtrusive one almost as fast. The honest trade is between a mark small enough to leave the image usable and one large enough to be inconvenient to remove, and a tiled, rotated, semi-transparent mark across the whole frame is the version that actually resists removal, at an obvious cost to the picture. For proof of authorship, a watermark is weaker evidence than the original file. Keep the raw camera file with its metadata intact somewhere private: it carries the capture time and device, which is far harder to fabricate than a visible mark. That is a reason to be deliberate about metadata rather than careless with it, and to strip it only from the copy you publish, using the EXIF remover on the export rather than on the original.

Use 1080 x 1350 for a portrait post, which occupies the most vertical space the feed allows, or 1080 x 1080 for a square. Stories and reels are 1080 x 1920. Uploading at these exact dimensions avoids a re-scale on the platform side, which is the usual cause of an image looking softer after posting than it did on your screen.
Why does my image get cropped when I post it?
Because the platform crops to the ratio its layout expects, and it crops from the centre by default. An image at 16:9 posted where 4:5 is served loses the top and bottom regardless of what is in them. Crop it yourself first with a focal point you choose, or pad it onto a matte at the target ratio so nothing is cut at all.
Should I crop my photo or add a matte?
