Your rising sign, properly called the ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born. It is read as the way you meet the world: first impressions, physical manner, the instinct you lead with when a situation is new. Astrologers treat it as the door rather than the room - the part of you that people describe accurately after ten minutes and inaccurately after ten years - which is why the description that fits you at a party is often not the one that fits you at home.

It is also the most demanding placement in a chart to calculate, and the reason is geometry rather than doctrine. The Earth turns once every twenty-four hours, so the entire zodiac passes over the eastern horizon every day and the ascendant moves through a new sign roughly every two hours. It depends on where you were standing as much as when: two people born at the same minute in London and in Sydney have completely different ascendants, because they had different horizons.
