Vertex Calculator

The vertex is the point where the ecliptic crosses the prime vertical in the west. The prime vertical is the great circle that runs from due east, up through the point directly overhead, and down to due west - so the vertex is the degree of the zodiac sitting due west of you at the moment of your birth. Because it depends on the direction west, it is a property of where you were standing as much as when, which puts it in the same family as the ascendant and the midheaven rather than with the planets.

Astrologers read it as the point of fated encounter: meetings you did not arrange, turning points that arrive rather than being chosen, and in synastry the contacts between two charts that feel less like a decision than a recognition. The anti-vertex, exactly opposite, is read as what you bring to those moments rather than what arrives in them. This is a modern point - it entered practice in the mid-twentieth century, and it has less traditional literature behind it than the angles or the nodes.

A vertex astrology calculator needs where as much as when, and the example shows why. For 7 November 1985 at 08:20 in London the vertex is 10°14' Cancer in the 8th house, with the anti-vertex at 10°14' Capricorn. Keep the date and local time but change the city to Sydney and the vertex moves to 14°13' Taurus. Leave the time out and this astrology vertex calculator returns no vertex, only a message that the calculation needs your exact birth time.

It is also easy to get wrong, and the error is silent. The usual shortcut computes the vertex as the ascendant of the co-latitude half a day round, which is correct in the northern hemisphere and returns the eastern crossing instead of the western one at some southern latitudes - a result 180 degrees out, in the opposite sign, with nothing about it that looks wrong. This calculator computes the closed form and then checks it against the definition, keeping the crossing whose azimuth is due west. The test suite runs that check at latitudes from 66 degrees south to 66 degrees north, at sidereal times seven degrees apart. The vertex needs an exact birth time and place. At the equator the prime vertical lines up with the celestial equator, so the vertex collapses to 0° Aries or 0° Libra whatever the birth time; within a degree of the equator the tool declines rather than returning a point that says nothing about you.
