Astrological compatibility compares two birth charts and reads the angles between them as a description of how the two people interact. It is the same technique as synastry; the difference here is that the result is condensed into a single score with the reasoning shown. Rather than the usual "Leo and Aquarius are opposites" - which compares two Sun signs and ignores the other nine placements in each chart - this uses the real positions of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the ascendant in both charts.

The score is a scheme, not a measurement, and this tool says so on the result rather than in the small print. Synastry is a traditional technique with a large literature and no agreed arithmetic; reducing it to a percentage is a modern convention that no historical source supports. What can be done honestly is to state the scheme: which pairings count, what each is worth, how exactness is factored in, and what happens to friction. All four are printed with the result, so you can judge the number instead of taking it on trust.

Two choices in that scheme are worth knowing about. Contacts are scaled by exactness, so a Sun-Moon trine within a degree counts for far more than the same aspect six degrees out - that is the one part of the weighting every tradition agrees on. And friction is discounted rather than subtracted in full, because a relationship with no squares at all is not the ideal the score should point at. The literature is consistent that some friction is what gives a pairing energy, and a scoring scheme that punished it would rank inert relationships highest.
