North Node Calculator

The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun. The North Node is where the Moon passes from south to north; the South Node is exactly opposite it, always. They are not objects - there is nothing there to see - but they are where eclipses happen, because an eclipse requires the Sun, Earth and Moon to line up in three dimensions rather than two, and that can only occur near a node.

Astrology reads the pair as an axis of development. The North Node marks unfamiliar territory: the direction you are said to be here to move toward, which typically feels effortful and unnatural. The South Node marks what already comes easily - competence you arrived with, and comfort that can quietly become avoidance. Because the two are always opposite, they are always in opposing signs, and any reading of one implies the other. This calculator reports both.

The nodes regress: they move backwards through the zodiac at about 19.3 degrees a year, spending roughly eighteen months in each sign and completing a circuit in 18.6 years. That period is why a nodal return lands near ages nineteen, thirty-seven, fifty-six and seventy-four. A birth date is all the calculation needs. One convention matters, and this tool states it rather than hiding it: there is a mean node, which uses the smoothed average motion, and a true node, which oscillates around it by up to about 1.6 degrees with a roughly six-month period. This calculator reports the mean node, and warns you when it sits close enough to a sign boundary that the true node could fall in the neighbouring sign - which is the only situation where the choice changes the answer.
