Chiron Sign Calculator

Find your Chiron sign - the "wounded healer" - from your birth date, computed from a JPL Horizons ephemeris rather than an approximate date table

Use the Chiron Sign Calculator

Chiron is the placement people meet last. You know your Sun sign, a friend has told you your Moon and rising, and then a reading mentions "your Chiron in Cancer" and you have no idea where that came from or how anyone worked it out. The short answer is that it comes from a real object in the outer solar system, it is settled by your birth date alone, and calculating it well is harder than calculating most of your chart.

This guide explains what Chiron is as an astronomical body, what astrology reads into it, why its sign dates are so uneven, and how the free Chiron sign calculator gets a position you can trust. It keeps the two halves apart on purpose: the position is astronomy and can be checked, while the meaning is a modern astrological tradition and cannot.

TL;DR: Your Chiron sign is the zodiac sign the small body 2060 Chiron occupied on your birth date. Astrology calls it the "wounded healer": an early hurt that never fully closes, and the help you learn to give because of it. Chiron takes about 50 years to orbit the Sun on a stretched ellipse, so it spends under two years in some signs and around eight in others. A birth date is enough to find the sign; a birth time and city add the house. The Toolz Chiron sign calculator reads positions from a JPL Horizons ephemeris covering 1900 to 2100, runs client-side, and is free, no signup.

What is Chiron, astronomically?

Chiron is a small icy body that orbits the Sun between Saturn and Uranus. It was discovered on 1 November 1977 by Charles Kowal at Palomar Observatory, and it carries two official labels: minor planet number 2060 and the comet designation 95P/Chiron, because it sometimes develops a faint coma like a comet. Its orbital data are public in the JPL Small-Body Database entry for 2060 Chiron.

Astronomers classify it as a Centaur, the group of small bodies whose orbits cross those of the giant planets. That classification matters for calculation, and we will come back to it. It also matters for a common question: Chiron is not a planet, not a dwarf planet, and not a moon. Astrology treats it as a chart point the same way it treats the lunar nodes or Black Moon Lilith, regardless of what astronomers call it.

The orbit is strongly elliptical. At its closest, around 8.5 astronomical units from the Sun, Chiron sits inside Saturn's orbit. At its farthest, around 18.8 units, it reaches almost as far as Uranus. One full circuit takes a little over 50 years.

What does a Chiron sign mean in astrology?

In astrology, your Chiron sign describes an early wound that does not fully heal and the particular kind of help you become able to give others because you carry it. The name comes from Greek myth: Chiron was the wise centaur who taught healing to heroes yet could not cure his own poisoned wound.

The interpretation is young. Astrologers began building it after the 1977 discovery, so unlike the Sun, Moon and classical planets, there is no ancient source to appeal to. That makes Chiron one of the few placements whose meaning has a documented modern origin. It is cultural material, and the calculator presents it that way: the page shows a disclaimer that the positions are astronomy and the readings are traditional attributions offered for interest.

Each sign colors the theme differently. Here is how the tool's own readings summarize the wound for each sign:

Chiron sign The wound is about The gift that grows from it
Aries The right to exist on your own terms Permission for others to want things openly
Taurus Worth, security, having enough Steadiness and a clear eye for real value
Gemini Being heard Listening properly, helping others find words
Cancer Home and belonging Making other people feel safe
Leo Being seen Drawing out other people's self-expression
Virgo Being good enough Gentleness with other people's imperfection
Libra Relationship itself Fairness and helping others repair things
Scorpio Trust and power Staying with people in hard places
Sagittarius Meaning and belief Honest teaching, more question than doctrine
Capricorn Authority and achievement Authority exercised kindly
Aquarius Belonging to a group Advocacy for whoever is outside now
Pisces Boundaries and faith Compassion, and learning where you end

Read the table as a summary of a tradition, not as a diagnosis. Nothing in a chart can tell you what happened to you, and the calculator does not try.

Why do Chiron sign dates vary so much?

Chiron's sign dates vary because its orbit is lopsided. A body on an ellipse moves fastest near the Sun and slowest far from it, which is Kepler's second law, and Chiron's ellipse is stretched enough to make the difference dramatic. Near its closest point it can cross a sign in little more than a year; near its farthest it lingers for about eight.

Chiron last passed closest to the Sun in 1996, while it was moving through the signs around Libra and Scorpio. That is why people born in the mid-1990s share their Chiron sign with a small cohort, and why people born across most of the 2010s share Chiron in Pisces or Aries with a very large one.

The approximate spans below show the pattern for recent decades. They are rounded, and every boundary has a period where Chiron crosses into the next sign, turns retrograde, drops back, and crosses again. Do not use this table for a birthday near an edge; use the calculator.

Chiron sign Approximate years (first entry to final exit) Roughly how long
Taurus 1976 to 1984 about 7 years
Gemini 1983 to 1988 about 5 years
Cancer 1988 to 1991 about 3 years
Leo 1991 to 1993 about 2 years
Virgo 1993 to 1995 under 2 years
Libra 1995 to 1996 about 1 year
Scorpio 1996 to 1999 about 2 years
Sagittarius 1999 to 2001 about 2 years
Capricorn 2001 to 2005 about 3 years
Aquarius 2005 to 2011 about 5 years
Pisces 2010 to 2019 about 8 years
Aries 2018 to 2027 about 8 years

The overlaps (Pisces starting in 2010 while Aquarius runs to 2011, for example) are those retrograde back-and-forth periods. Someone born in 2010 could have Chiron in either sign depending on the exact date.

How do you calculate a Chiron sign?

You calculate a Chiron sign by finding Chiron's position along the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent path, at the moment of birth, and then reading which 30-degree slice of that circle it falls in. Astrology in the Western tropical tradition starts the circle at the March equinox point: 0 to 30 degrees is Aries, 30 to 60 is Taurus, and so on to Pisces at 330 to 360. The Toolz calculators use this tropical zodiac.

The hard part is the position. For the Sun, the Moon and the major planets there are compact mathematical theories that give accurate positions for any date. Chiron has none. Its orbit passes close to Saturn, and Saturn's gravity nudges it enough that the orbit is chaotic over long spans. If you take one set of orbital elements and project it forward decades, the error grows to degrees, which is enough to put Chiron in the wrong sign near a boundary.

The calculator avoids that by not computing an orbit at all. It carries a table of Chiron's positions sampled from JPL Horizons, NASA's ephemeris service, which integrates the full solar system. The table covers 1900 to 2100 at 16-day steps, and the tool interpolates between samples with a cubic curve. The project's test suite compares the interpolated result against Horizons at eight dates between 1905 and 2060, and every one agrees to within 10 arcseconds. A sign is 30 degrees wide, which is 108,000 arcseconds, so that error cannot change a sign except on the day of a crossing.

Outside 1900 to 2100 the calculator returns no Chiron position rather than guessing. A wrong Chiron sign looks exactly like a right one, so declining is the honest behavior.

Do you need a birth time to find your Chiron sign?

No. A birth date is enough for the sign on almost every birthday. Chiron rarely moves more than about a tenth of a degree in a day, so the hour you were born changes its position by a few arcminutes at most.

The exception is a birth within about a day of Chiron changing sign. In that case the calculator shows a note on the result saying the placement is close to a boundary and a time would settle it. Without a time, the chart is cast for noon, which keeps the maximum error to half a day in either direction.

A birth time and a birth city add something different: the house. Houses divide the sky around the birthplace at the moment of birth, and they turn a full circle every day, so they need both an accurate time and a location. With both, the calculator reports which house Chiron falls in using the Placidus system, the default in most modern astrology software. Inside the polar circles, where Placidus cannot be calculated, it switches to Equal houses and says so. With a time but no city, no house is shown and the time is read as UTC.

If your birth certificate gives a local time from another country, the time zone conversion guide explains how offsets and daylight saving shift a clock time, which is the usual source of a wrong house.

A worked example: 19 August 1990

Take a birth date of 19 August 1990, entered with no birth time and no place.

  1. The calculator casts the chart for noon on that date, because the time is unknown.
  2. It looks up Chiron in the Horizons table and interpolates to that instant.
  3. It reports Chiron at 22°52' Cancer.

Cancer runs from 90 to 120 degrees of ecliptic longitude, and 22°52' Cancer is 112.87 degrees, comfortably inside the sign and more than 7 degrees from the next boundary. At a tenth of a degree a day, Chiron would need weeks to reach Leo, so the sign is certain without a time.

Now add a birth time of 14:45 and Dhaka as the city. The position becomes 22°51' Cancer, one arcminute different from the noon estimate, and the result now shows house 7. The degree barely moved; the house appeared. That is the whole relationship in one example: the date settles the sign, and the time and place settle the house.

The result card also lists the sign's element (water for Cancer), its modality (cardinal) and its ruler, followed by the reading for Chiron in Cancer. A Copy button puts the placement, the degree, the house if there is one and the UTC instant used onto your clipboard.

What is a Chiron return?

A Chiron return is the point in your life when Chiron comes back to the exact position it held at your birth, after one full orbit. Because that orbit takes about 50 years, most people reach it between ages 49 and 51.

The age varies slightly from person to person because Chiron's speed depends on where it is in its orbit, and because Earth's own motion makes Chiron appear to loop backward for part of each year. Some people have a single exact return; others have three passes over a year or so as Chiron moves forward, retrogrades back over the degree and moves forward again.

Astrologers treat the Chiron return as a period of reckoning with the theme of the placement, which is why it is often discussed alongside the second Saturn return in the late fifties. As with the rest of the reading, that is interpretation. The timing is astronomy and can be read off an ephemeris.

How does Chiron compare with other chart points?

Chiron behaves very differently from the points it is usually read next to. The table shows what each needs from you and why, using the motion figures the Toolz astrology tools are built on.

Point What it is How fast it moves What you need to enter
Sun sign The Sun's position About 1 degree a day Birth date, time only near a cusp
Moon sign The Moon's position About 13 degrees a day Birth date, time to be certain
Rising sign The ascendant A full circle a day Exact time and place
Venus sign Venus's position A bit over 1 degree a day Birth date, time near a cusp
Chiron sign 2060 Chiron's position Two to eight years per sign Birth date only
North Node Where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic About 18 months per sign, backward Birth date only
Black Moon Lilith The Moon's apogee About 9 months per sign Birth date only

Chiron and the North Node are generational in a way the Sun and Moon are not: large groups of people born in the same years share them. That is part of why astrologers weigh the house position, which is personal, alongside the sign, which is shared.

To see Chiron against the rest of your chart, the North Node calculator and the Lilith sign calculator work the same way, and the astrology tools hub lists the full set, including a birth chart that places Chiron with every other body.

What can go wrong, and what are the limits?

Most wrong Chiron signs come from one of four places, and the calculator is built to avoid or report each one.

A date table instead of a position. Many websites list Chiron sign "dates" as simple ranges. Around a retrograde crossing those ranges are wrong for days or weeks, because Chiron can cross a boundary three times. The calculator computes the real position, so a retrograde loop back over a boundary is reported correctly.

Propagated orbital elements. A calculator that projects Chiron from one orbit solution drifts over decades. The Horizons table avoids this within 1900 to 2100.

Dates outside the table. A birth before 1900 or after 2100 gets no Chiron position, with a notice explaining why. Other points in the chart still calculate.

Local time mistakes. These do not change the sign, but they change the house. Enter the local clock time and the city so the tool can apply that place's time zone, and use the UTC offset override in the form's advanced options if you know the clocks were set differently that day.

There is also a daily usage limit per visitor, as on other Toolz tools. Only the fact that a calculation happened is tracked, along with whether a time and place were entered. The birth details themselves are not sent.

Is the Chiron sign calculator private?

Yes. The ephemeris is a static file that loads with the page, and the calculation runs in your browser. The date, time, place and name you type are not uploaded or stored, and once the page has loaded the calculation works without a network connection. That makes it a reasonable place to look up a partner's or a relative's placement without handing their birth details to a server.

If you want to compare your Chiron sign with a friend's, run the Chiron placement calculator once for each birth date and use the Copy button to keep the results side by side.
