Fractions are handled as exact integer pairs rather than converted to decimals, which matters more than it sounds. A third has no exact decimal form, so a calculator working in floating point gives 0.3333 and accumulates error across a chain of operations, while adding a third to two thirds here returns exactly one. That is why the working can be shown step by step: every intermediate value is a real fraction rather than a rounded approximation. Results are reduced to lowest terms automatically using the greatest common divisor, and improper results are offered as mixed numbers, since 7/3 and 2 1/3 are the same value and different audiences expect different forms.
