What is N-Up PDF?

N-Up PDF interface on Toolz.dev - Arrange multiple pages on a single sheet (2-up, 4-up, 6-up, 9-up)

N-Up PDF is a free online tool that arranges multiple PDF pages onto a single sheet. Choose from 2-up, 4-up, 6-up, or 9-up layouts to fit multiple pages on one printed page. This is commonly used to save paper when printing, create study handouts, or prepare compact document summaries.

The term "N-Up" refers to the printing practice of placing N pages on a single sheet. For example, 2-up places two pages side by side, while 4-up arranges four pages in a 2x2 grid. The tool automatically scales and positions each page to fit the selected layout while maintaining readability.

All processing happens in your browser with no server uploads. Upload your PDF, choose the layout, and download the result. The tool handles page scaling, positioning, and orientation automatically to produce a print-ready document.

The point of n-up is saving paper, and the trade is legibility. At 2-up a normal document stays comfortable to read; 4-up is fine for slides and drafts; 9-up is a contact sheet, useful for seeing the shape of a document rather than reading it. As a rough guide, 11pt body text from a Letter page prints at about 5pt on a 4-up sheet and about 3pt on a 9-up sheet. The tool adds a margin around each cell rather than cropping content. Because the pages are placed as vector content rather than screenshots, text remains selectable and searchable in the output. Each page is scaled from its own size, so a document that mixes page sizes or orientations keeps every page in proportion, although a landscape page in a portrait-shaped cell is drawn smaller than its neighbours. One thing to watch: anything already close to the trim edge can end up tight against a neighbour.

Whether you call it n up pdf or pdf n up, the job is the same: several pages printed on one sheet. Here is a checkable example. Load a 10-page Letter report and choose 4-up. Output Preview reads 10 pages will be arranged into 3 sheet(s), and Download 4-up PDF saves 4-up-report.pdf. Each page is drawn at about 47% of its size on a portrait Letter sheet, and the third sheet holds pages 9 and 10 across its top row with the bottom two cells left empty.
