What is a Unit Converter?

Unit Converter interface on Toolz.dev - Convert length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, time, data, pressure, energy, and angle units instantly with exact conversion factors

A Unit Converter translates a quantity from one unit of measurement into another - 30 centimeters into inches, 180 pounds into kilograms, 25 °C into Fahrenheit, 500 megabytes into mebibytes. Behind each conversion is a fixed factor defined by international standards, and this tool applies those factors exactly rather than the rounded approximations people carry around in their heads.

As a temperature unit converter, it takes 37 °C and lists 98.6 °F, 310.15 K and 558.27 °R in the all-units table at once. The same page works as a pressure unit converter, where 32 psi comes out as 2.2063223 bar or 220.63223 kPa, and as a length unit converter, where 6 ft is exactly 1.8288 m. Click a category button to switch between them: the number you typed stays in the box and the units reset to that category's defaults.

The converter covers eleven categories: length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, time, data, pressure, energy, and angle. Within each category every unit is expressed as a ratio to a single base unit, so converting is a single multiply-and-divide with no accumulated rounding. Temperature is handled separately because Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin, and Rankine are affine scales with different zero points, not simple multiples of each other.

It runs entirely in your browser, updates as you type, and shows the value in every other unit of the category at once - so you get the answer you asked for plus the ones you were about to ask for. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored, and the tool keeps working with no network connection once the page has loaded.

Two categories behave differently from the rest and are worth understanding. Temperature is an interval scale rather than a ratio one, so conversions apply an offset as well as a factor: 20 degrees Celsius is not twice 10, and a difference of 10 degrees is not the same conversion as a reading of 10 degrees. Data units are the other, and the ambiguity is genuine rather than pedantic. A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes under the SI definition used by drive manufacturers and 1,024 under the binary convention used by most operating systems, which is the entire reason a 1TB drive shows as roughly 931GB in a file manager. Both are offered here, with the binary units under their correct names of kibibyte and mebibyte.

How to use the Unit Converter?

1

Pick a category

Choose Length, Weight, Temperature, Area, Volume, Speed, Time, Data, Pressure, Energy, or Angle. Sensible default units are pre-selected for each one.

2

Enter a value and choose units

Type the number, then pick the unit you are converting from and the unit you want. Decimals, scientific notation, and thousands separators are all accepted.

3

Read the result instantly

The conversion updates as you type. Use the swap button to reverse direction, or read the "all units" panel to see the same value in every unit of the category.

4

Copy the result

Copy just the number, or the full expression such as "1 km = 0.62137119 mi", and paste it straight into a doc, spreadsheet, or code comment.

Key Features

Eleven measurement categories

Length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, time, data, pressure, energy, and angle - 97 units in total, including the ones developers need like CSS pixels, points, and mebibytes.

Exact standard factors

One inch is exactly 0.0254 m, one pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, one BTU is 1055.05585262 J. The tool uses the defined values, not classroom approximations.

Decimal vs binary data units

kB, MB, and GB (powers of 1000) sit alongside KiB, MiB, and GiB (powers of 1024), so you can finally see why a "500 GB" drive shows up as 465 GiB.

Convert to every unit at once

One value, every unit in the category, updated live. Useful when you are comparing options rather than converting a single known pair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide centimeters by 2.54, because one inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm. So 30 cm ÷ 2.54 = 11.811 inches. Select Length, enter your value in centimeters, and pick Inch as the target unit to get the exact figure without doing the arithmetic yourself.
