Pinterest shows you a resized copy of everything. A board renders images at whatever width the column needs, and the pin page shows a larger but still processed version, so a right-click and Save gives you a preview rather than the picture. This reads the pin and returns the original file the platform holds.

For a video pin or an idea pin, it returns the video. Pinterest stores several sizes, and all of them are offered with the largest first. Idea pins are the multi-page format, and each page is a separate piece of media, so they come back as separate files rather than as the first page alone.

For an image pin, it returns the full-resolution original. This is the difference people notice: a pin that renders at 736 pixels wide on the board is often a 1200 or 2000 pixel image underneath, and that is what comes back. For anyone collecting reference images, that gap is the entire point of using a tool rather than the browser's own save.

Both pinterest.com links and the `pin.it` short links the app produces resolve, as do the regional domains such as pinterest.co.uk and pinterest.de. A link to a board rather than to a single pin cannot be read, because a board is a collection rather than a piece of media, and the page says so rather than guessing which pin you meant.

What a pin links out to is a separate matter. Many pins point at a blog post or a shop, and the pin itself holds only the image. This returns the pin's media, not whatever is on the destination page.
