When you attach a GIF to a post, X converts it to a silent MP4 loop, because an MP4 of the same animation is a fraction of the size and plays far better on a phone. So a "GIF" from X downloads as an .mp4 with no audio track. That is the actual file, not a substitution made here, and it is usually what you want, since a real GIF of the same clip would be several times larger and look worse.

Quoted posts, replies and threads are all addressable. The link points at one post, and the video in that post is what comes back. If a thread has video in three posts, each needs its own link, because each is a separate object as far as the platform is concerned.

Only public posts can be read. A protected account serves its posts to approved followers who are signed in, and a deleted post serves nothing to anyone. Age-restricted and sensitive-media posts sometimes require a session as well. The page says which case it hit rather than failing blankly.
