What is a GIF to PNG converter?
A GIF to PNG converter turns a GIF into a still PNG image. Say the important part first: animation does not survive. If the GIF moves, you get its first frame and the page tells you so on the row, because PNG holds a single image and this converter does not write animated PNG. For a still GIF, a logo, a diagram, a pixel-art sprite, a screenshot someone saved in the wrong format, the conversion is a straight swap of container with nothing lost.
PNG is the better home for that kind of artwork. GIF caps a frame at 256 colors and stores transparency as a single on or off flag per pixel, which is why a GIF logo often has a hard fringe around its curves. PNG stores the decoded pixels losslessly and supports a full alpha channel, so the flat color areas and hard edges of a logo or line drawing come through exactly as they are and transparent areas stay transparent. Converting to JPG instead would flatten that transparency to white and smear the edges with compression noise, which is the usual reason people land here rather than on the GIF to JPG page.
A worked example. You have loading-spinner.gif, 480 x 270, 40 frames. Drop it in and it converts straight away: you get loading-spinner.png at 480 x 270 with the first frame only, the row shows the size before and after and how much smaller or larger the PNG is, and a note states that the other frames were dropped. If you needed a frame from the middle rather than the start, this is not the tool for that: it does not export a numbered PNG sequence, and there is no frame picker.
The limits are short and worth reading once. The PNG cannot hold more color information than the GIF had, so a 256-color source stays a 256-color picture; nothing is upgraded. Conversion runs through a canvas, so any metadata the file carried is dropped. Pixel dimensions are unchanged. Images over 100 megapixels are refused with a message, empty files are refused, and there is no byte-size cap. Everything runs client-side in the browser tab, and the tool is free, no signup, with a daily usage limit. Going the other way, from a still image into GIF format, is what the PNG to GIF page is for, though that writes one GIF per file rather than stitching frames together.
How to convert GIF to PNG
Add your GIF files
Drop them on the area marked "Drop GIF images here or click to upload", or click it to pick them. Several files at once is fine, and each one starts converting as soon as it is added. The X on a row removes one you did not mean to add.
Adjust settings if you need to
There is no quality slider, because PNG is lossless and has nothing to trade away, so the results are already on their way. Each file is converted in turn and its row shows a spinner with Converting while it works.
Check each row
A finished row shows a thumbnail, Complete and a size line with the size before and after and how much smaller or larger the PNG is. An animated source adds a note saying only the first frame was kept, because PNG cannot animate. Click the thumbnail to open the PNG large and switch between Before and After.
Download the results
The download icon on a row saves that single file. Download All (n images) in the list header gives you converted-png.zip, with repeated names numbered so nothing is overwritten.
Why convert GIF to PNG?
GIF has been around since the 1980s, and plenty of still images are stuck in it for no better reason than that. These are the cases where moving to PNG pays off.
Old still graphics that need editing
Early web logos, clip art, diagrams and pixel art were routinely saved as GIF. Editing a GIF means working inside a 256-color palette, and some editors force the palette back on every save. As a PNG, the same image can take new colors, soft shadows and semi-transparent edges once you start changing it.
A still frame for a document or thumbnail
Docs, slide decks, app store listings and email newsletters often want a still image where a GIF would autoplay or be blocked. The first frame of the animation, saved as PNG, gives you a crisp poster image with no compression noise added.
Check that the first frame is the one you want. Some animations start on a blank or faded frame, and this page does not offer a frame picker.
Sites that treat every GIF as an animation
Some upload forms and profile picture fields reject GIF outright or handle it as a moving image. A PNG goes through as an ordinary picture and keeps its transparency, which a GIF to JPG conversion cannot do.

What 256 colors means
A GIF does not store colors pixel by pixel. Each frame carries a palette of at most 256 entries, and every pixel is a number pointing into that palette. For a logo with five flat colors that limit is invisible. For a photo or a smooth gradient, the encoder that made the GIF had to pick the 256 closest colors and approximate everything else, usually with dithering: a scatter of alternating dots that the eye blends into an in-between shade.
Converting to PNG copies the result exactly. The palette colors, the dither dots and the hard banding in a gradient all come through as they were, because the PNG is written from the decoded GIF pixels and has nothing better to work from. What changes is the ceiling. Once the image is a PNG, any edit you make can use millions of colors and partial transparency without being forced back into a palette.
Transparency works the same way. GIF reserves one palette entry as fully transparent, so an edge is either there or not. In the PNG those pixels become fully transparent alpha, and the stair-stepped fringe around a curve stays visible until someone redraws it.
Privacy and security
- Every GIF is decoded and re-encoded client-side in this tab, using the browser's Canvas API, and ImageDecoder where the browser has it. Nothing is uploaded and no WebAssembly codec is fetched.
- Frame counting for the animation note happens locally too. In browsers without ImageDecoder, the note says the first frame was kept if the file is animated, rather than guessing.
- The daily usage check sends a file count, total size in bytes and the output format. It never sends file names or image data, and no image is stored on a server.
- Any metadata blocks in the GIF, such as comments, are not carried into the PNG, which is built from pixels alone.
- Results stay in the tab's memory until you remove them, press Clear All or close the page.
