What is a JPG to PNG converter?
A JPG to PNG converter decodes a JPEG and stores the resulting pixels as PNG, a lossless format. The part people usually miss is the direction of travel. PNG preserves whatever it is handed, exactly, and it never loses anything again no matter how often you re-save it. What it cannot do is recover what JPEG already threw away. If the JPG arrived soft, blocky around text or ringed with halos near sharp edges, the PNG holds those same artifacts perfectly.
It also tends to produce a bigger file, not a smaller one. A photograph that is a modest JPG can come back several times larger as a PNG, because PNG faithfully encodes every pixel of the photographic grain that JPEG was smoothing away. That is not a fault in the conversion. It is what lossless means when the subject is a photograph, and it is the single most common surprise on this page.
PNG earns its size on a different class of image. Screenshots, logos, icons, line art, diagrams and charts are mostly flat color with hard edges, which is exactly what PNG compresses well and exactly what JPEG handles worst, since the block transform that makes photographs small is what put the fuzz around your text. PNG is also the right answer when an upload form rejects JPEG, when a design or print workflow wants no further generation loss, or when the next tool in the chain expects a format that can carry an alpha channel.
Converting to PNG does not add transparency, which is worth being blunt about. A JPG has no alpha channel to carry across, so the PNG comes out fully opaque with the background it always had. Making that background disappear is a separate job for a background remover, not a change of format. Two smaller notes: the conversion runs through a canvas, so EXIF, GPS coordinates and color profiles are dropped, and several files convert in one pass and download together as a ZIP. Everything happens client-side, nothing is uploaded, images over 100 megapixels are refused, and it is free, no signup, with a daily limit on conversions.

Why convert JPG to PNG?
Going from JPG to PNG never makes a picture look better, and it usually makes the file bigger. People still do it every day, for reasons that have more to do with what happens to the image next than with the image itself.
The image is about to be edited
A JPG loses a little detail every time it is opened, changed and saved as JPG again. Cropping a product shot, adding arrows to a screenshot or retouching a scan across several sessions stacks those losses on top of each other.
Converting once at the start gives the editor a lossless working copy. Every later save keeps the pixels exactly, and the only JPEG damage in the final image is the damage that was there when you began.
Screenshots and diagrams that were saved as JPG
Some phones, chat apps and capture tools save screenshots as JPG by default. Text, interface lines and flat color are what JPEG handles worst, so faint smudges appear around every letter. PNG will not remove those smudges, but it stops them spreading when the image is annotated, resized or pasted into a document and saved again.

Some design tools, sticker and emoji uploaders, and print or build pipelines accept PNG only. PNG is also the format to hand a background remover, because the cut-out needs an alpha channel to land in and a JPG has nowhere to put one.

Why the PNG comes out bigger
PNG compresses by predicting each pixel from its neighbours and then packing the leftover differences with DEFLATE, the same method ZIP files use. When neighbouring pixels match, as they do across a flat background or a block of solid color, the leftovers are tiny and the file stays small.
A decoded JPG rarely gives PNG that chance. Photographic grain changes from one pixel to the next, and JPEG compression adds its own faint noise around edges and inside each 8 x 8 block. PNG has to record all of it exactly, including the artifacts, so the output grows.
The same logic explains the exceptions. A JPG of a simple logo or a mostly white document can come out close to its original size, because most of the decoded pixels still repeat. The size line on each row shows which way your file went before you download anything.
Privacy and security
- Your JPG files stay on your device. Each one is decoded and saved as PNG inside the browser tab with the Canvas API, and no image data is uploaded.
- The daily limit is checked with a request that names this tool and carries a device identifier, plus your sign-in token when you have one.
- Once a batch finishes, the page reports the number of files converted, their total size in bytes and the output format. File names and pixels are never included.
- EXIF fields, GPS coordinates and embedded color profiles do not survive the trip, because the PNG is built from decoded pixels only.
- The PNG files exist in the tab's memory until you remove them, press Clear All or close the page. Nothing is kept on a server.
