Are my images uploaded to a server?

How does the compression work?

The image is drawn onto a canvas at its original dimensions and re-encoded at the quality you choose. That means the pixels are genuinely re-compressed rather than the file being repackaged, which is why the savings can be large.

Why does the quality slider do nothing for PNG?

Because PNG is a lossless format and the browser ignores the quality argument when encoding it. Choosing PNG gives you PNG-sized output whatever the slider says - switch to JPEG or WebP if you want the slider to matter.

Which format should I choose?

WebP for the web, which is typically 25-35% smaller than JPEG at matching quality and is supported by every current browser. JPEG when something downstream will not accept WebP. PNG only when you need lossless output or transparency.

What happens to transparency if I choose JPEG?

It is lost, because JPEG has no alpha channel. Transparent areas are filled with white rather than preserved, which shows up as a white box behind a logo. Use PNG or WebP for anything with transparency.

Does compressing an image here remove its EXIF and GPS data?

Yes. Re-encoding through a canvas produces a fresh image with no metadata, so camera settings, timestamps and GPS coordinates are all dropped. That is a privacy benefit when publishing photographs, and a loss if you were relying on the metadata.

Could the colours shift after compressing?

Slightly, for images carrying an embedded colour profile, because the profile is not carried through the canvas. Photographs in sRGB - which is nearly all of them - are unaffected; wide-gamut images from a professional camera can look flatter.

What quality setting should I use to compress a photo?

Around 80 is the usual sweet spot for photographs: the difference from the original is hard to see and the file is a fraction of the size. Below about 60 compression artefacts become visible in flat areas and around sharp edges.

Can I compress the same image twice?

You can, but do not. Lossy compression discards information each time, so a second pass degrades the image further without saving much. Always go back to the original when you want a different quality.

What happens to an animated GIF?

Only the first frame survives. A canvas holds one still image, so an animation is flattened to its opening frame - use a dedicated animation tool if you need to keep the motion.

Why did my image get bigger?

Usually because the source was already well compressed and you re-encoded it at a high quality setting, or because you converted a photograph to PNG. Lower the quality, or pick a lossy format.

Does compressing change the dimensions?

No. The image is re-encoded at its original width and height. Use Image Resize if you also want fewer pixels, which is usually the bigger saving of the two.

Is there a file size limit?

Can I compress an image for PowerPoint or Word here?

How do I compress an image to 2MB or less?

If quality 60 is still too large, resize the image first. The readout counts 1 MB as 1,024 KB, so a file shown as 1.9 MB is also under a 2 MB limit that counts in thousands.

How do I get the smallest possible file?
