Tip Calculator

The Tip Calculator works out how much to tip and what everyone owes when a check is split. Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage - either a one-tap preset like 15%, 18%, or 20% or your own number - and the tool returns the tip amount, the grand total, and, when more than one person is paying, the exact per-person share. It removes the mental arithmetic and the "is that too much or too little?" second-guessing at the end of a meal.

Tip math is the same percentage wherever you pay, so the page works as a hair salon tip calculator, a nail salon tip calculator, or a restaurant tip calculator without switching modes. A $65 haircut with a 20% tip is $13, for a $78 total. A $40 manicure at 18% is a $7.20 tip. Only the customary percentage changes from one service to the next, and you choose that number.

It also handles the parts of a real check that trip people up. You can add a sales tax percentage and decide whether the tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal - the standard etiquette in the United States - or on the taxed total. And because splitting a bill rarely divides evenly, an optional round-up step bumps either the grand total or each person's share up to the next whole dollar, showing you exactly how much extra that adds and what the tip percentage effectively becomes.

Everything runs in your browser in plain JavaScript. No bill amounts are sent anywhere, there is no sign-up, and the calculator keeps working with no connection once the page has loaded - handy in a restaurant with patchy signal. It is built for the phone in your hand at the table, but works just as well on a laptop for planning a budget or reconciling a group expense.

The one convention worth deciding deliberately is whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total, since the two differ by the tax rate and there is no universal rule. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the more common advice in the United States and gives the smaller figure. Splitting is even by default, and rounding the total and rounding per person do not give the same result: rounding per person can leave the group paying slightly more than the bill.
